On tonight's show: Helve, National Service and Anna Wolf
Helve @helve___
Helve are a five piece indie/jazz band based in south London. They met and formed at college in Croydon. This is where they started to experiment with sounds from genres such as jazz, folk, electronic and experimental music. They have played at various venues across London such as Hootannany Brixton and the George Tavern in Shadwell. In order to get to know the band Leon (the frontman) works at a roller disco. Sam (lead guitarist) is grade 5 on the bassoon. Theo (drummer) is from Huddersfield and is currently homeless. Pat (bassist) only has one kidney. Torin (keyboard player) is a lifeguard.
National Service @nationalservicemusic
"National Service formed in 2015, from previous projects, school friendships, and introductions at Goldsmiths University.
The band signed with legendary indie label Fierce Panda in January 2017 and released their first single, A Little More Time to cult acclaim. Their follow up Timid Kisses was BBC 6 track of the week and was Steve Lamacq's National Anthem.
2018's exploratory 'Foreign Love EP' was followed up with the shimmering 'Meltwater EP' in 2019. Vocalist Fintan Campbell describes the work: “It’s lusher, angrier, more urgent, with deeper layers of instrumentation, more ambitious production, more collaborative composition and more expansive. We felt it was definitely a strong manifesto in terms of what to expect from a live show.”
Live highlights include supports of Man of Moon, To Kill a King & Broken Records.
2020 saw the release of standalone single 'Caving', with further significant airtime and positive write-ups. The track pays tribute to the rhythm sections of Interpol & Radiohead, with droning guitars a la Joy Division & the Twilight Sad, coupled with the signature heart-on-sleeve musings of Campbell's baritone. A follow-up cover of 'Last January' by the aforementioned Twilight Sad followed as a lockdown project celebrating Fierce Panda's 27th birthday.
The band are currently preparing to record their debut album, due for release spring/summer '21. "
